Protection and Sharing

• Protection for the same reason as in paging

• Sharing for the same reason as in paging – remember re-entrant code

Fragmentation

External fragmentation still occurs

• Segments are variable in length whereas pages are fixed in length

• Efficiency Considerations

  • Large segment size – 1 segment per process
  • Fixed-size, small segments
